Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Reviews

Just in the nick of time

"Fast shipping, received my order the next day, well-packaged. I didn't know I needed this particular stone until I saw a Knifewear video. It's a lot less work when you start in the right place with the right quality of stone. Thank You!"

Amazing!

"Amazing stone cuts fast made light work of thinning and repairing damaged blades"

Brian L. (5/5)

Great quality stone

"I attended the knife sharpening class March 15 and purchased the 220 grit stone. I was eager to try it out on my other knives at home to practice what I learned. All my other knives are now sharp and a joy to use."

Jocelyne H. (5/5)

Fantastic 220 Stone

"I've had this stone since March and I use it every single day. I sharpen dozens of knives ever week and just about every single knife gets started on this stone. After a few months this is what I have discovered. The stone removes material very quickly which is great when you are doing repairs or putting a new edge on an extremely dull knife. I will warn you it is not a smooth 220 and is quite loud. It does wear down fairly quick if you use it like I do every day. That being said you know instantly whether or not you are at the correct angle of the knife you are working on. The price is unbeatable for what you get and even if you go through a couple, you will still spend less than on a Naniwa professional. I have gone through MANY 220 stones and this has without question become my got to. Whether you are just getting into sharpening, its your hobby or you do it professionally I would absolutely recommend this stone. You will not be disappointed."

Brad G. (5/5)

Great stone! It’s pretty fast

"Great stone! It’s pretty fast and with a good slurry it’s not too scratchy. It doesn’t gouge too easily if you manage your pressure right. Very pleased with it."

Benoit B. (5/5)

I use a stainless steel

"I use a stainless steel knife, and when I sharpen it with this whetstone, I can cut through ingredients very smoothly. Compared to other whetstones sold online for a similar price, I feel that the whetstones from Knifewear are on a whole different level."

Higa T. (5/5)
