Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Reviews

High quality stone. I just

"High quality stone. I just wish they sold plastic cases for them or something."

Jeff D. (5/5)

Great addition to my sharpening journey

"Good value and a great product from a company with exceptional service."

Jim W. (5/5)

Sharp knives for Christmas

"I am pleased that I will have sharp knives when I help cook at my family’s homes"

Charles D. (5/5)

Essential part of kit

"I have coarse hair so the higher grits and strop usually isn’t enough to get the blade sharp again once it’s dull. I find this grit stone pretty essential, the price is good for the quality. If you decide to build a set I find it a very needed grit range for when straight razor gets extra dull. If you’re just doing regular kitchen knives, I hear this can be good on its own."

Victor H. (5/5)

Good quality W

"I was surprised how sharp my knifes got just a 4000 and the price is fairly good. Definitely recommend to anyone"

Noah T. (5/5)

Great all around stone

"Excellent product and once again, amazing customer service from the Vancouver Team. Shout out to Liam for his expertise and advice."

Tim G. (5/5)

Brilliant stone

"And was a great value. My only other reference is a 4000 Grit waterstone from Lee Valley that I've used for years. This one seems a tick harder. Certainly raises a burr and polishes quickly."

Mike D. (5/5)

4000

"Finishes my knives great with a smooth edge that's super sharp. The stone is very easy to work!"

Tyler M. (5/5)

Nice finishing stone

"Bought this as part of the Knifewear essential sharpening set, along with the 220 and 1000 stones. I am new to knife sharpening, but you can feel the quality of this finishing stone. My french knives have never been sharper, and I find it easy to maintain the edge of my japanese petty with it."

Jocelyn B. (5/5)

Good but it's cracking.

"Love the feel of using this stone. It's hard but soft if that makes sense. I don't like that it's now started to have a spiderweb of fine cracks all over both sides after just a few months. Not sure if it's something I've done wrong. I use it splash and go and wipe it dry before putting it on a wooden rack. Not sure how much longer it has."

Q&A

How does this stone compare to the Naniwa T-940 4000 grit Traditional Stone?
Hey John, our stores are just rebrands of the Naniwa stones, T-940 is a newer stone, as we have tested a lot, but I imagine the two stones are similar. Sorry we don't have better information on this one - Ellie
Is this stone a suitable step up from a Naniwa 1000/3000 combination stone that I have? I have VG-10, Aogami 2, SRS15, and SG2 knives. Should I look at this 4000 stone or go to 8000 from my 3000 stone? Thanks!
100% you can use this as a next step to refine the edges for your current set, however I can also suggest that if you want a little more difference you should upgrade to the Naniwa Chosera Profesisonal Series #5000 https://knifewear.com/products/naniwa-professional-stone-5000-210x70x20?variant=5875700932 if you'd like a little more difference between your 3000 stone
I bought a knifewear 4000 grit sharpening whetstone. On the box is written “do not soak”. On your site description of this particular stone you call it a “water stone”. I am a little confused......How do I use this stone?
Hey there, sorry for the confusion there! You can just splash it with water and it'll be good to go. Some stones require to be put into water for 15-20 minutes before use, this one you can just splash and go! - Ellie
Are these knifewear stones similar to the naiwia stones?
Hey there, these stones are made by Naniwa, and include stones that aren't usually available outside of Japan! Let me know if you have any other questions!
