Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Trying stone 220

"Small and not very effective"

Francois B. (3/5)

Truing stone

"I have a 2 sided stone that was significantly out of spec. Following instructions I used a sharpie to make an x and hash lines on the old surfaces. The truing stone was effective and easy to use to bring the stone back to flat although significant work was required. I'm sure that with frequent use of the truing stone I'll be able to bring the stones back to spec fairly quickly."

RICHARD G. (5/5)

Does the job!

"Still early on in the game but so far so good :)"

Mandy L. (5/5)

Trying stone

"Keeps my stones flat and removes material evenly and smoothly. I use this every time before I switch to the other edge of my blades to keep the edge shape sharp and sharpening a breeze. A must have for consistent results!"

Tyler M. (5/5)

Truing stone

"Second truing stone I've bought. Works amazing and is definitely necessary to keep those stones flat!! Love this shop. The staff are incredible knowledgeable and so friendly."

True Grit

"I bought this to go with my 220 grit stone. It's easy to use, I just followed the directions on the YouTube video I watched and all was good. Drawing lines on my sharpening stone was very helpful in ensuring I applied the truing stone evenly."

Q&A

Hello. I have a Naniwa PA 220 and a Shapton ceramic 1000. Will this work for both these stones?
Hi Rab, yep you can absolutely use this trying stone on both of those stones. - Ellie
G'day, can you use this to flatten a natural water stone ?
Yes! They'll work on your natural stone :)
Hello, I have a broken tip on my knife, I am looking for a stone with higher grit to reshape it. Would I be able to use the backside of the Knifewear Truing Stone 220 Grit to reshape? I wasn't aware that I was suppose "truing" my current stone, so have a second use for this stone would be great. I currently have Naniwa Professional Chosera Stone 800 Grit. Thanks alot, you guys do amazing work.
Hey, you definitely could! This video has some helpful tips: https://youtu.be/cp4eFG5AsU4
Any issue using this to flatten Shapton glass 500 & 2000 stones?
Not at all! Given the price point, this stone is fairly flat but not perfectly so. If you'd like something fancier, this is a good choice: https://knifewear.com/products/atoma-diamond-plate-140-grit-210x75x2mm?variant=3031521755164
I used this on my red 1000 grit stone. The Stone was wet and when I ran the truing stone over the sharpening stone the red stone really lifted and kind turned into a mortar paste. This has now dried and stuck to the truing stone. In this normal? How do I safely clean this"paste" residue off of the truing stone?
Hey ther! That is totally normal. Since the truing stone grinds down the stone's surface, it creates that red mud. If you'd like, you can rinse it off with water and a plastic brush!
