Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Owen is the best!

"The product is excellent and as expected. However I would like to say how fantastic Owen was, right from when I called him inquiring about the product to when I went to the store to pick it up. The store was super busy and while he was providing attention and service to a few people, he saw that I had the product on my phone and said. . . Carolyn. . . I have your order right here. Thanks Owen for providing exactly what I wanted and for your fantastic customer service! Both my husband and I will be returning! Thanks Owen! See you again, soon! Carolyn"

I use a stainless steel

"I use a stainless steel knife, and when I sharpen it with this whetstone, I can cut through ingredients very smoothly. Compared to other whetstones sold online for a similar price, I feel that the whetstones from Knifewear are on a whole different level."

Higa T. (5/5)

First time sharpener

"I wanted a stone that was one step better than Amazon, and settled on this combo stone. Practiced with 2 softer German knives and seems to have worked well! Will have to eventually try it with my Japanese steel as well."

Q&A

I've seen in your videos that some stones need soaking and others not. How do you handle a combo stone like your 1000/3000?
Generally combo stones are soaked, this one definitely can be!
You say these stones are made for you by Naniwa and I was wondering if they had a family resemblance in the ways they perform to any of the lines in the Naniwa brand. Just curious.
Hey there, they are similar to the "Traditional" line of Naniwa stones, the 4000 stone though isn't avilable in North America under any brand though! - Ellie
Can Knifewear clarify which side/colour is 1000 or 3000 grit. My wife purchased this item from you guys, and honestly, I cannot tell the difference.
Hey Brayden, The darker/reddish brown side of the stone is the 1000 grit and the yellow stone is the 3000 grit on these ones! Alex
