Sexy or what?? Masakage Kumo knives are handmade with VG10 stainless steel. This series is named Kumo (cloud) because the blades look like clouds on a really cool day. The Damascus steel is manipulated by hand to give this great dreamy look. The rosewood and pakka wood octagon handle give the blades a nice light feel and forward balance.
These knives are hand forged from VG-10 high carbon stainless steel and laminated with layered nickel Damascus stainless steel. VG10 was created for knife making. What a clever idea. This steel has the highest recommendations in the production of knives by authorities such as the British Steel Confederation, C.A.T.R.A and the Solingen Institute of Steel in Germany. VG-10 has a high Carbon percentage (0.95 to1.05%) for hardness and ease of re-sharpening, Molybdenum (0.9 to 1.2%) and Vanadium (0.1 to 0.3%) are added for their stainless properties and Cobalt (1.3 to 1.5%) for toughness.
Katsushige Anryu san is a 70 year old blacksmith with 52 years experience who works in Takefu Village. We are lucky to be able to work with such a skilled craftsman.
Masakage Knives are designed and selected by Kevin Kent of Knifewear and Shibata san, Hiroshima’s top knife sharpener. All are handmade in Japan by blacksmiths chosen for their excellence.
